It's a scenario that should make for great viewing this Saturday at George Park 1 when Bathurst City meets City Colts.
The two clubs have experienced their share of amazing finals and regular season contests during the Bathurst District Cricket Association period of the 2010s, and while they haven't quite got back to those highs you can always expect the teams to bring their best to the table when they play one another.
Each side come into the game of much-needed wins that have kept them in close proximity to the valuable top five ladder positions.
Very little has also separated the two clubs since the BOIDC's re-introduction in 2019-20. Their only meeting of the first season was washed out while they shared the spoils across 2020-21's two games.
Bathurst City skipper Joey Coughlan said it's a matchup that never loses its spark.
"This is best rivalry in Bathurst cricket," he said.
"As long as I can remember it's always been 'us' and 'them'. Blokes like Dan Casey and Russ Gardner used to play for Redbacks before the deferred over the City Colts, and Greg Adams played for both sides.
"When you get guys who have played for both clubs going against each other that always adds an extra little bit of feeling to the contest."
Coughlan said last week's successful run defence against Centrals could be the platform for his side to develop some consistency.
"That [ladder situation] will add something extra to it then. I'm not looking too much at the ladder at the moment, I'm just looking at trying to get some consistent cricket together for us," he said.
"We need to string a couple of wins together. We had a good win last week because we were the only team to defend a score, and that was only 117. It's not like we put on a big score and defended it, it was a tight contest.
"We've got our big guns firing at the moment instead of relying on our young juniors to get us through. We tried to rest those big guns early in the season ... and hopefully we'll come into the latter end of the season a lot stronger and a lot fresher."
