Mr Drew was handed the award for Best Editing in an Australian Short Film at the Flickerfest 2022 Awards for Ishmael, a seven-minute short film about a fisherman dealing with a loved one battling cancer.
For Mr Drew, who first developed a love for film working at Metro Cinemas as a projectionist, the award is a highlight in his emerging career in film, where he fills film editing roles for a host of advertising, entertainment and events clients.
"Ishmael was personal to director Toby Morris, as he lost his mother to cancer, so he put a lot of trust in me to treat the work with the respect it deserved," he said.
"It's as much Toby's award as it is mine. I knew the film would win an award, but I didn't think I'd win an award myself for editing, but it's as much an award for the fantastic efforts of the entire crew."
Mr Drew became a freelance editor two years ago after spending the preceding four and a half years with a Sydney-based production company.
"I've been really lucky to work with a bunch of awesome directors and film crews along the way," he said.

"My career started off making seconds-long advertisements for social media, but it's developing into helping tell bigger and better stories; I live for the passion projects."
