Soprano Ayse Göknur Shanal and tenor Michael Butchard will team with pianist Gavin Tipping – All Saints’ Anglican Cathedral’s director of music – to present a program featuring some of classical music’s greatest songs, arias and duets, as well as some music theatre gems.
The two singers met in 2016 while performing in an installation at the Museum of Contemporary Art and it was during performances of Handel’s Messiah in 2017 in Bathurst and Gulgong that they met Mr Tipping.
“We had such a great time performing together and we were looking for an opportunity to work together again,” Mr Butchard said.
“My moving to Orange last month gave us the impetus to go ahead with the project.”
Mr Butchard, an Australian classical tenor, trained in Sydney and London and has performed as a soloist and ensemble member in Australia, the UK, Europe and China.
Alongside his musical career, he works professionally as a coffee roaster and has moved to Orange as the new head roaster and barista trainer at Bill’s Beans.
Brisbane-born soprano Ayșe Göknur Shanal studied at London’s prestigious Royal College of Music as a Dame Joan Sutherland Scholar and was an adjunct member of the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
Mr Tipping, a performer and educator, was born in Sydney and later studied at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Trinity College of Music London and Durham University.
Before assuming the post of director of music at All Saints’ Anglican Cathedral Bathurst in 2016, Mr Tipping was principal organist at St Mary’s Cathedral Sydney for 10 years and served as a lecturer at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
He has toured internationally with St Mary’s Cathedral Choir, given solo recitals in Europe, the USA and South East Asia, and played at churches and cathedrals in Australia and around the world.
The concert at All Saints’ Cathedral will be held this Friday, June 29 at 7pm.
Further performances will take place at Orange Regional Conservatorium on Saturday, June 30 at 2.30pm and St Matthew’s Catholic School Drama Room in Mudgee on Sunday, July 1 at 2.30pm.
Tickets are $25/$20 concession (children under 12 free) and will be available at the door or at Trybooking.com
