Member for Bathurst Paul Toole was joined by the Blayney Fishing Club to release the fish, with club president Tom Williams saying the program aims to promote recreational fishing and encourages the reporting of tagged fish numbers to monitor activity.
“Annual restocking programs for our local waterways is not only important to maintain the aquatic ecosystem, it is an important way to boost visitation numbers to the area,” he said.
Around 500 rainbow trout fingerlings that were farmed for this purpose, travelled from Ebor, in northern NSW, to be relocated into Carcoar Dam as part of the program.
Mr Toole said the program is very valuable as a tourism development opportunity and to help reserve our waterways and environment.
“A number of dams and rivers across the Central West are part of the NSW Government restocking program,” he said.
“These dams and rivers will receive their annual amount of trout fingerlings in the next few months including Ben Chifley Dam, Wyangala, Oberon River, Oberon Dam, Lake Lyell and Thompson’s Creek in Portland.”
Blayney Shire Council mayor Scott Ferguson welcomed the program to increase visitor numbers to the area.
“There is so much to see and do in Blayney, our historic villages and the region,” he said.
