IN a horror start to the Christmas holiday season a 62-year-old woman is dead following a single vehicle crash on the outskirts of Bathurst on Wednesday.

A passing motorist came across the horrific scene just before 9am, immediately alerting emergency services.
However, nothing could be done to save the driver.
She was the sole occupant of the blue Mazda which had been torn into two after impacting with a tree.

A spokesperson for police said another driver came across the accident scene on the Sofala Road, on the outskirts of Kelso.
The caller said it appeared the car had left the road and crashed into a tree.
Officers from Chifley Police District responded, but the driver was unresponsive and died at the scene.
A crime scene was established with investigations into the fatality still under way.
Police are preparing a report for the coroner, and ask anyone with information to contact them or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
