Bathurst hasn't joined the bandwagon as of yet, but in recent weeks, residents have expressed their desire to see such an installation in the community, with the Tremain's Mill silos emerging as an ideal location.

Tremain's Mill owner Stephen Birrell is supportive of the idea, saying it would be a shame to see the "blank canvas" of the silos wasted.

"We need to attract more people to Bathurst, and joining the Australian Silo Art Trail would be a successful way to do it," Mr Birrell said.

"At some stage in the future, there may be tiny studio apartments inside, but that wouldn't affect the artwork."

Since the first silo art projects emerged in Western Australia six years ago, the Australian Silo Art Trail has expanded to 50 silo art and 100 water tower art locations across the country.

The Portland installation, painted by Guido Van Helten in 2018, brought new life to the village's old cement works, now known as The Foundations, which has since grown as a tourist asset.

Mr Birrell said the Portland installation, which honours five individuals with strong ties to the cement works, serves as an ideal blueprint for Bathurst to follow.

"There's been talk about how to honour Bathurst on the silos; Ben Chifley certainly comes to mind, as does Wahluu-Mount Panorama and Bathurst's Wiradyuri history," he said.

"I'd personally like to see Bathurst's milling history honoured in some way, as Tremain's Mill is where they're obviously located."

"However, I don't think anything garish or colourful would suit the silos...Portland's installation is an ideal source for inspiration."

Mr Birrell said a project could be swiftly commissioned with enough momentum and the right funding.

"There's four canvases at play [two silos, both sides] for artists to utilise, and we've already started engaging with artists to see what might be possible," he said.

"The Australian Silo Art Trail has brought waves of tourism to numerous regional towns, and there's no doubt a Bathurst installation would bring people in."

Tremain's Mill became a featured site for Bathurst Winter Festival illuminations last year, and the precinct is frequented by a vast community demographic.
