As we look back at the past decade of sport in Bathurst, it's time to have a glance at the Bathurst District Football first grade grand finals from 2010 to 2019. There's been a host of local and out-of-town clubs that have lifted the grand final trophy in that time including Macquarie United, Bathurst City Colts, Mudgee Wolves, Lithgow Workman's Club, CSU and Panorama.

2010
- MEN'S: Macquarie United 1 (Aaron Kilby) defeated Young Lions 0
- WOMEN'S: Collegians 3 (Cassie Jones, Amanda Assaf, Lauren Brilley) defeated Young Lionesses 2 (Stephanie Hall, Courtney Gambrill)
Just one goal from Macquarie United's Aaron Kilby was enough to fend off Young Lions in a scrappy grand final that was never secure until the final whistle blew. The defending premiers did just enough to hold off Young, who were slight favourites, with Kilby's winner coming on the hour mark. Kilby made good ground to reach a loose ball fired forward on a Macquarie counter-attack. He got the ball first and beat his Young opponent, however, Kilby didn't make great contact and looked to have missed his chance as the ball bobbled along the grass to Young goalkeeper Mat McKnight, who dived forward to smother it. The ball had other ideas though, and having hit a divot or tuft of grass, it bounced clean over the top of him to break the nil-all deadlock.
In the women's decider, Collegians were crowned champions after holding off a gallant Young outfit 3-2. The high-scoring affair was worthy of a grand final as both sides enjoyed plenty of opportunities, but Young simply could not run down Collegians, who led virtually all the way. After the victory, Collegians captain Jess Rudge described the match as "the toughest game we've had".
2011
- MEN'S: Bathurst City Colts 0 defeated Macquarie United 0 on penalties 6-5
- WOMEN'S: Bathurst City Colts 3 (Jade Braun, Reg Cover, Rachel Braun) defeated Macquarie United 0
He may have played in fourth grade for Eglinton in 2019, but back in 2011, Trent Browne was a first grade goalkeeper for Bathurst City Colts. And on grand final day he made a hero of himself after helping his team to a grand final win in a penalty shootout. Browne managed to twice get a desperate left-foot to shots from Macquarie United in the sudden-death shootout after scores were locked at nil-all after full time and half an hour of extra time. Had it not been for a serious back injury, Brendan Inwood would have lined up in goals, but Browne made a hero of himself while filling the breach.

And City Colts made it a double on grand final day when the women's side cruised to a comfortable 3-0 win over Macquarie United too. Two goals in the first half put Colts firmly on top and a third in the second stanza ensured that they would complete an emphatic season in 2011. The extra experience of Colts was telling in the end against the speedy but inexperienced Macquarie side, and goals to skipper Jade Braun, Reg Cover and Rachel Braun were enough to seal a memorable title win.
2012
- MEN'S: Mudgee Wolves 2 (Jessie Tomlinson, James Ford) defeated City Colts 0
- WOMEN'S: Bathurst City Colts 10 (Jade Braun 3, Megan Embleton 2, Rachel Braun 2, Shannon Waine, Rylee Dionigi, Rebecca Ford) defeated Orange Ex-Services 0
Mudgee Wolves claimed its first Bathurst District Football men's first grade title in 2012, after overcoming defending premiers City Colts 2-0 in the decider. A brace of goals from nowhere in the second half triggered big celebrations from a small but vocal contingent of supporters after it looked as though Colts had the better of the contest for most of the first hour. As desperately as they tried to pull back the deficit, Colts were repelled time and time again by the last line of defence and the visitors were rewarded with the biggest win in their history as a club competing in the Bathurst competition.
There was no contested in the women's decider, with Bathurst City Colts remarkably defeating Orange rivals Ex-Services 10-0 in the grand final. Colts were unbackable favourites coming into the match, having gone through the competition undefeated and Colts' superiority was evident from the kick-off as they scored three goals in the first six minutes and added another seven before the full-time whistle. Jade Braun scored a hat-trick, while Megan Embleton and Rachel Braun scored twice.
2013
- MEN'S: Lithgow Workman's Club 3 (Matt Noonan, Todd Costello, Brad Luka) defeated CSU 2 (Josh Brown, Christopher Newtolley)
- WOMEN'S: Orange Ex-Services 1 (Alex Quick) defeated Cowra Eagles 1 (Kristy Ford) on penalties 3-1
The Bathurst District Football men's first grade title was won by a non-Bathurst side for the second consecutive year when Lithgow Workman's Club played the last 20 minutes with 10 men to beat CSU 3-2. Workman's came into the match as underdogs after losing 5-2 to the Stags in the major semi-final, but were able to turn it around with a determined performance. Lithgow led by two goals midway through the first half before going to half-time on level terms, 2-all. They were able to edge one ahead of CSU early in the second half and held on, despite a red card to their captain, Matt Noonan, and plenty of pressure from the speedy Stags attack.
There were no Bathurst teams in the 2013 grand final, as Orange Ex-Serivces turned around its horror 2012 women's decider with a penalty shootout victory over Cowra Eagles. Goals at opposite ends of 90 minutes saw the scores locked at 1-all on the siren and the deadlock wasn't broken in extra-time either, sending the match into a shootout and the Orange team were too strong. Cowra kicked their first but missed the next three, while Ex-Services slotted all three to secure the win. Ex-Services coach Richard Gathercole said it was extremely satisfying to break through, even if it was closer than they had been hoping.
2014
- MEN'S: Lithgow Workmen's Club 2 (Brendan Hall 2) defeated Bathurst '75 0
- WOMEN'S: CSU 2 (own goal, Amanda Marks) defeated Orange Ex-Services 1 (own goal)
Lithgow Workman's Club defended its 2013 title in style, coming from fourth place on the ladder to upset Bathurst '75 with a 2-0 win. In a physical and at times ill-tempered match at Proctor Park, two first half goals proved the difference, in particular one to Brendan Hall on the stroke of halftime to double Lithgow's lead after he had also scored their first. Bathurst '75 finished the match with just nine men after two sendoffs in the second half, the second of which in particular had dire consequences. A little while earlier his teammate Luke Brennan had been shown a second yellow card after a bad tackle. With a two-man disadvantage and a two-goal deficit, it was game over at that stage for '75.
CSU ended its 15-year wait for a women's first grade premiership and it was delivered after a hard-fought 2-1 win over Orange Ex-Services. An even and nervy first half gave way to plenty of action in the second as two own-goals had both sides scratching their heads. Eventually it was the students who proved too strong. In the opening 45 minutes possession and territory were evenly shared as the two teams tried to sort each other out a fortnight after CSU had prevailed 1-0 in the major semi-final. Not a lot of clear-cut or even half-chances were created, but even given the close nature of the contest, there was still a feeling that something out of the ordinary was around the corner in order to separate them. Finally not long after play resumed in the second half, a well-rehearsed move from the students led to Amanda Marks scoring her team's first. CSU would soon concede an own-goal before the Vixens found the winner through an Ex-Services' own goal.
2015
- MEN'S: Abercrombie 2 (Jacob Soetens 2) defeated CSU 0
- WOMEN'S: CSU 4 (Sheridynn Wearing, Meaghan Kempson, Courtney Milne, Elizabeth Barron) defeated Millthorpe Tigers 0
Two-and-a-half years prior to the 2015 Bathurst District Football men's first grade grand final, Abercrombie were making its club debut. And two-and-half years on from their beginnings, the club were crowned first grade winners. A double in the second half from regular goal-scoring threat Jacob Soetens gave his side a 2-0 win over CSU. Soetens shrugged off a defender to slide a shot into the bottom left of the net before sealing the deal with a successful penalty kick in the final minutes of regular time. Coach Jack Dwyer knew he had a strong side on his hands, but was still pleasantly surprised to get a victory in such a short space of time. "It started out as just a bunch of mates wanting to come out and have a bit of fun and I think we brought that to the game," he said.
CSU were celebrating back-to-back titles in 2015 with a commanding 4-0 win over out-of-town rivals Millthorpe in the final match of the women's first grade season. Going into the match as overwhelming favourites having hammered just about everyone they faced throughout the season, CSU didn't surprise anyone with their win, but they were forced to work hard for it. "They really made it hard for us. Usually we have a tendency to score a few more once we get the ball rolling, but their defence was good," CSU coach Daisy Morrissey said.
2016
- MEN'S: CSU 2 (James Shaw 2) defeated Lithgow Workman's Club 0
- WOMEN'S: CSU 2 (Annie Reid, Elizabeth Barron) defeated Abercrombie 1
After two grand final defeats in three seasons, CSU finally broke its two-decade Bathurst District Football first grade duck after defeating Lithgow Workman's Club in atrocious conditions. James Shaw snared two second half goals for the students in a game where accurate passing was virtually impossible and sending the ball through the air proved a more efficient means of making progress. "It feels absolutely phenomenal to lift that burden off our shoulders. It was great and I think this will go down as one of the biggest wins this club has ever had," CSU coach Mitch Kunnen said.
The head of Annie Reid was the difference for CSU against Abercrombie, as the Vixens claimed a third consecutive women's title after a 2-1 extra-time win. A long range screamer from Elizabeth Barron allowed the students to reply immediately after opponents Abercrombie FC broke the nil-all deadlock inside the final 10 minutes of regular time. In the little remaining time left before the final whistle neither side could find a second goal in a tense conclusion. In extra-time Reid headed home a cross from Megan Lamb to give CSU a memorable grand final win over the minor premiers.
2017
- MEN'S: CSU White 3 (Olly Briggs, Alec Geelan, Ben Green) defeated Panorama Red 2 (Paul Long, Jaiden Culbert)
- WOMEN'S: CSU 3 (Meaghan Kempson 2, Paula Mitchell) defeated Panorama 1 (Hayley Cheney)
In one of the most thrilling Bathurst District Football men's first grade deciders of all time, CSU White came away with the spoils with a 3-2 win over Panorama Red. Panorama, who were only five years old at the time, were in their first men's first grade decider, while CSU were the defending champions and what happened in the last 10 minutes was quite remarkable. There had been no change to the scoreboard since the 11th minute and both supporter groups were doing their best to keep the energy levels high on a chilly Bathurst evening, and the CSU side of the ground soon had a reason to crank the volume up to a new level. Alec Geelan capitalised on a Goats defensive lapse to find the breakthrough goal, sparking wild celebrations from players and fans alike at the northern end of the ground. Moments later the Stags' Ben Green doubled the advantage. However, the match's dramatic finish still had more to offer. With less than five minutes remaining the Goats brought the margin back to one when Paul Long's effort on goal was followed up by a determined Panorama attack. Panorama peppered the CSU goal with more late efforts but the Stags held on to defend their premiership in thrilling fashion.
CSU continued its dominance of the women's game, with the Vixens too good for Panorama 3-1. A brace from club president Meaghan Kempson and a late goal from Paula Mitchell took the students out to a 3-0 lead. Panorama picked up a late goal thanks to a strong Hayley Cheney effort but there was no clawing back the Vixens' lead.
2018
- MEN'S: Panorama Red 3 (Jacob Soetens 2, Jaiden Culbert) defeated Mudgee Wolves 1 (Adam O'Connell)
- WOMEN'S: Panorama 2 (Hayley Cheney, Lisa Matthew) defeated CSU 1 (Julia Elks)
Six year's on since the club's birth, Panorama were crowned Bathurst District Football men's first grade champions. The club's title came after Panorama Red were rarely challenged in a comfortable 3-1 win over Mudgee Wolves in the men's decider. Red striker Jacob Soetens scored two goals in the opening half to give his side a 2-0 buffer, before Jaiden Culbert slotted home a penalty after half-time. A goal not long after from Wolves was not enough to inspire a comeback for the visitors.
Panorama fans were cheering on its women side to its maiden women's first grade title too, after dethroning CSU, who were gunning for its five consecutive title. Panorama took a 1-0 lead to the break and scored a second in the second half, before Hayley Cheeney received her marching orders after being booked for a second time. CSU responded within minutes of the sending off and made it a nervous finish for Panorama but they held on to win 2-1. Panorama coach Brent Huie said it was an emotional day for the club. "There's only been first grade ladies at this club for two years now, so to get the win is bloody beautiful," he said.
2019
- MEN'S: Lithgow Workman's Club 2 (Brad Luka, Nick Young) defeated Abercrombie 2 (Damien Booth, Jack Press) on penalties 5-4
- WOMEN'S: CSU 3 (Sarah Evans, Emily Thurlow, Minna Annand) defeated Panorama 3 (Madison Gallegos 3) on penalties 5-3
For the first time in six years, a grand final went to a penalty shootout, with both men's and women's decided on the treated shootout. And it was the local hopefuls Abercrombie that suffered heartbreak to out-of-towners Lithgow Workman's Club after leading 2-0 after just 15 minutes. Lithgow would claw back to score two goals and send the match to extra-time, with goalkeeper Sam Johnson producing several clutch stops in extra-time and one more crucial block in the shoot-out to cap off a special grand final performance.
Panorama had an incredible regular season in 2019 Bathurst District Football women's first grade, but it was CSU who claimed a fifth premiership in six seasons after a penalty shootout. Panorama's Maddison Gallegos scored a hat-trick for the defeated side, while Sarah Evans, Emily Thurlow and Minna Annand all finding the mark for the Vixens. Come the shootout, both teams nailed their first three attempts and Annabel Meadley's shot put CSU 4-3 up. Shania Morgan's shot was a good one for Panorama but CSU goalkeeper Bridie Gordon made the stop, giving Lydia Nancarrow the winning moment in the Vixens' next attempt.
