Bathurst Regional Council has advertised the tender for construction of a roundabout at the contentiousness intersection in West Bathurst.
The project, now in the early planning and consultation stages, will include the relocation of the existing car park and realignment of utilities and services including gas and water.
Mayor Graeme Hanger council had listened to the community calls for a roundabout and staff were now undertaking preliminary works.
"A consulting engineering firm has been engaged to prepare construction drawings and staff have commenced engaging the stakeholders that will be most impacted," he said.
"The project timeline, cost and level of disruption, at this early stage are still being determined, however it is expected there will be traffic impacts, including full closures of the intersection, for more than nine months."
To keep the community informed on the progress, council will post regular project updates on the YourSay Bathurst website.
It was revealed at the last council meeting, on May 1, that the tender process was nearing.
The news was welcomed by Kent and Dianne McNab, the strongest campaigners for the roundabout.
"We were so excited when we got home. We couldn't sleep," Mr McNab told the Western Advocate.
"And we can give the people of Bathurst some positive news now, because the people ask us all the time."
